Mary Niederkorn, originally from Chicago, is a working actress based in New York City. On screen she’s often the vindictive boss who hides her vulnerability well, the society wife you thwart at your peril, or the gorgeous grandma who definitely oversteps but loves her brood unconditionally. FIlm highlights include her role as Susan in the independent film, The Commitment, which earned her the Best Actress award from the National Association of Social Workers Film Competition. Her second short film, Homophonia, which she wrote and produced, was an official selection in three Oscar-qualifying short film festivals, including the prestigious Palm Springs International Short Film Festival.
Ms. Niederkorn is an ovarian cancer survivor. Seven years after her diagnosis she performed the role of Vivian Bearing in Wit at the Salem Theatre Company, where Florence Sternhagen compared her performance to that of Cathy Chalfant’s. Other theater credits include Irma in Prayer for the French Republic at Huntington Theatre. She has also performed at the American Repertory Theater (ART), The Baryshnikov Arts Center, and Hudson Guild Theatre (Off-Broadway debut). She holds a Bachelor’s in Applied Voice from University of Illinois, Urbana. She is an AGMA member, and performed at Chicago Lyric Opera and the Tanglewood Music Festival. She worked with Phyllis Curtin at Boston University and holds an Artist Diploma in operatic performance.
During the pandemic she began writing in earnest with guidance from Larry Moss and Seth Barrish, and wrote and self-produced her solo show, Thank You For Trying to Make Me a Better Person in 2022, at Theatre Row in NYC. She is currently adapting it into a film. She also studied film editing, and became a member of the Scott Flaherty Voice Studio.
Here’s a favorite quote of hers from Dorothy Sayers: “Time and trouble will tame an advanced young woman, but an advanced old woman is uncontrollable by any earthly force.”
Just ask her husband.
